Hello, and happy new year.

May 2020 be a year of good cheer for you and yours.

May 2020 bring you health, companionship, supportive friends, and the exceptional love of family.

May 2020 be a glorious and safe cycling season for us all.

Speaking of which, it’s never too soon to think about key cycling dates. Here are a few, you might want to consider. It’s always worthwhile having goals and objectives. The big one, of course, is the RLCT. All the others, with the exception of the PEI Granfondo will be adequately taken care of through our regular weekend riding regime. So no panic there.

The RLCT, however, requires proper training, meaning sufficient volume and intensity of effort, with lots of hill climbing in preparation for the worst conditions. It also requires a bicycle in excellent working order, with good cables, brakes, gearing, chain, tyres, etc. If you haven’t already done so, now is a great time to have your bike serviced. There’s no rush at the bike shops and you’re in no hurry either. So, why not get your bike tuned up now and be ready for the road come spring.

And, don’t forget about your fitness either – cardio, strength, and flexibility. You should (might want to) consider being as active as possible this winter. Sloth never sleeps, so be vigilant against complacency and idleness. The protocol advocated by the Ottawa Heart Institute is 200 to 400 minutes of moderate/intense aerobic exercise per week. That won’t be enough for us but it’s a start. If you’re getting less than this, you’ll lack stroke volume and the cardiac output necessary to deliver adequate oxygen to working muscles. That’s fine if your goal is riding around the block but not for 100-180 kilometre endurance rides. There are ten to twelve weeks (maybe) of training time (April 01 – June 12) in preparation for the RLCT. Don’t back-end all of your fitness to these weeks. Front-end and cruise to Kingston instead.
