June 02/18: 91 Kms; 2 Hrs, 58; 373 Metres; Eleven Riders

Well hello. How are you after that windy cycle. Winded? That was a difficult ride.

I’m stiff, and not in the best fettle after my feckless riding. Apologies to everyone. And, specifically, thank you to JR, GG, and PD for their roadside help. Also, a big thank you to everyone for their general support. I expect all will be well in time. The good news is that I passed the pavement bone density test. No small measure for those of advanced age. Still, I don’t recommend you ask your local doc for this method of testing.

Leads me to ponder what mends quickest – a broken heart, broken bones, a concussed head, or a broken fence. Now, that’s not a perfect quartet of related nouns. How does one account for that incongruous enumeration? Forgive me – “My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains/My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk.”

I think my head is hurting more than I know. Will hemlock help? Not sure. A friend, is that the term, often recommends a few Radlers. I think I’ll get a six-pack after posting this blog. You may question my state of mind. You’d be right. Still, a stiff drink or two might loosen my stiffening limbs. My swollen head, now that’s different prospect.

Still, that was an excellent ride, albeit the conditions were tough. What a merry bunch we are. Irrepressible in our enthusiasm for cycling, for the joy to be had on a bicycle, and the sweet whir of tyres, and the chase to the top of the climb – followed by coffee in celebration. To quote Wordsworth, “(one) could not but be gay,/In such a jocund company”. You know you just should have been there.

Okay, here’s the plan for Sunday:

Meet at Stinsons on White Lake Rd for a 7:30 am 7:30 7.30 am start and ride uneventfully to Pakenham for sticky buns and coffee (km 37). Route is via Russett, Flat Rapids, Stewartville, Kippen, Creekside, W-L, Bellamy, Campbell Sd Rd, Waba, Barr, Pakenham, Kinburn, Loggers Way, Galletta, Dwyer Hill, etc. Total 72 kms; 392 Metres.

Ask yourself, where else would you rather be “when the alarm rings on Sunday morning than on your bicycle pedalling away the fatty bits?” You know you’ll just want to be there.

It was nice to see Alastair again and to welcome Jeff R to the group. Also, Kudos to Peter and Alastair for their solo efforts. And, not forgetting Mark G for saddling up and testing his hip. Also, just want to acknowledge KO’s initiative in dealing with the logistics and timely delivery of the new mafia jerseys.

Caveat: Route is tentative and is depends upon rider consensus, the turnout, and the weather.

For those with time constraints, there are many options to cut it short. Don’t miss out, just because the route is longer than you have time for. Weather:  12C – 19 C; Sunshine; winds E 20.

A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils. WW
