Hello. I’m back.

You say, “Go away again. We’ve managed fine without you.” Well, that can be arranged but I’m here for a while yet, being in recovery mode now. Meantime, a big thanks to KO for keeping the wheels rolling during my absence.

Here’s my review of the Raid Pyrenees:

I just completed the Raid Pyrenees with Stuart Hall Cycling.  This was Epic, with a capital ‘E’. Yes, no doubt, other tour companies can get you from Hendaye to Cerbere but not likely on the secondary roads, by-ways, lanes, and obscure Cols that only Stuart manages to discover. If you want a memorable adventure and an experience of a life-time, then, Stuart Hall’s Raid Pyrenees will deliver in spades. This is no easy ride; and requires one to be in peak aerobic condition, with legs of steel, a resolute mind, and a willing spirit. It’s just fabulous, and a worthy goal for any serious cyclist. It’s six days of concentrated effort; you’ll be tired, yes, but you won’t stop smiling.

Have you ever found coins on the sidewalk? I did this morning. Two quarters, then a toonie, then another toonie, and then another quarter – $4.75 in all. Imagine that, all within 10 yards of each other on River Road. Lucky day for me, but not so for the person who lost the coins – a child or teenager, their lunch money, perhaps. I actually, didn’t feel so good about my find when I considered this – my gain at the expense of another. But, nothing could be done about that. What we have requires looking after, don’t you think. So, I strolled on, running the coins in my pocket through my fingers. I thought to myself that when we lose something, we usually carry on unaware of the loss, absorbed as we are in the mundane.  And, that the return by a stranger of what’s lost is often more than what was lost itself. Things are lost and found every day but not so the immaterial.

Here’s the tentative plan for Saturday: (subject to rider consensus)

Meet at Stinsons on White Lake Rd for 7:30 am 7:30 am start and ride to Norton/34 via W-L, Burnstown, Pucker St, Whalen, #132, Raglan to The Bistro for coffee (km 71); home via Hall, Gillan, L-W, Goshen, #508, Stewartville, Flat Rapids, etc for a total distance of 103 kms and 744 metres of climbing. For those with time constraints, there are options to cut it short either at Burnstown or Renfrew.

This route is hilly, full stop. I know there will be criticism but think of the route as an atonement for waywardness these  past two weeks. Just kidding.

When the alarm rings in the morning, ask yourself, “Where else would I rather be?” than on my bike pedalling away the fatty bits. If you need encouragement, just think you’ll be five months off the bicycle (Nov – March). And, the weather is perfect for Saturday.

Our training goal is to gain power and strength and to build upon our existing endurance base.

As usual, it’s steady as she goes, with minimal delays on the road.

Weather: 16 – 25 C, full sun; POP 10%; winds W, NW, SW 10.

Caveat: All this subject to change based upon the turnout and the weather and rider consensus.
