June 03/17: 121 Kms; 4 Hrs 11; 1236 Metres; Twelve Riders

That was a tough one, as evidenced by the collective sigh-of-relief upon our return to Stinsons. This is not to say that the ride wasn’t enjoyable. It was in that  sadistic sort of way that pain can satisfy, leaving one wanting more – but not just right away. You just should have been there. The fun quotient was commensurate to the hard effort required in the early going. All told, the hills and wind combined to make for a seriously difficult ride, not to mention the rough road surfaces that bounced us around and sapped energy from forward motion.

The first 89 kms were more or less an extended roller coaster of up-and-downs, only to be capped by the climb up Pinnacle Hill. Fortunately, the acrid reek of farm ammonia that hung in the air at the top of Pinnacle served as a kind of smelling salts (irritating the membranes of nose and lungs) and triggering a deep inhalation just as it was needed to avoid total collapse. This greatly aided our recover and we sped away towards the Garden of Eden Road and Glory. There were no doubters now to the question, “Where else would you rather be?” The ride was now pure heaven, and so it was for the next 40 kilometres. If delight were ice-cream, we helped ourselves to the freezer contents, like a young boy left alone, unattended and hungry. Totally satisfying. Breath deeply and smile – beautiful.

News (from Mark – Cyclists Responsibility Code): http://www.ontariocycling.org/forms/form-cyclist-responsibility-code-must-read-before-downloading/

Here’s the tentative plan for Sunday:

Meet at Stinsons on White Lake Rd for 7:30 am 7:30 am start and ride to Almonte via Galetta, Logger’s Way, Kinburn (Km 23), Dwyer Hill Rd, Vaughn Side Rd, County Rd 49, Martin St (Km 49), Blakeney (Km 54), Pakenham for coffee at the General Store (Km 64.5 ); home via Waba, Conc 8 (Km 75), White Lake Rd for a total distance of 87 Kms. Ride can be shortened to 82 Kms at Conc 10, if there is no interest in riding Waba Rd to Conc 8.

This route is relatively flat (aren’t they all around here?). There is a long drag out of Kinburn, a couple of climbs on Vaughn Side Rd, and again on Waba. That’s it. The plan is to ride without a lot of effort but to get a few more kilometres ridden, and then call it day until the RLCT, next weekend. The idea being that consecutive days of cycling will help build a base of endurance for when it counts most. Don’t miss it.

As usual, it’s steady as she goes, with minimal delays on the road.

Weather: 12 – 19 C , mostly clouds, winds south-east 15. POP ranges from 30% at the start and 80% (at noon). Please check the blog (6:45 am) for any last-minute cancellation. I’ll only post if the ride is called off.

Caveat: All this subject to change based upon the turnout and the weather and rider consensus.
