August 20/16: 70 Kms; 2 Hrs 12; 374 Metres; Nine Riders

Hello to the casual, the sometime, and the regular reader. Sorry, you missed this one. It had your name all over it. All things in moderation, you say. Well, we had a moderate distance and a moderate effort – all in the company of like-minded individuals on back country roads, with just enough ups and downs to make it interesting, and with lots of late summer stimulation springing from the fields and wayside; and, with the wind (at the turn) making the homeward leg immensely pleasurable. Yes, you just should have been there.

You might say that this morning’s ride was a light orderve (Liggett and Sherwen) to tempt the palette for the next course, that being tomorrow’s TdB. Unfortunately, that tour has the potential to cause indigestion and severe cramping with each pedal stroke. But, take no mind of that; we’ll ride in spite of the nasty forecast. We’ll devour it like  a ravenous hyena attacking a downed wildebeest.

Why – why life is short; time passes unawares, mostly; and, it’s adversity that creates memories. Repose can wait timidly indoors. Yes, I say, eschew the lazy-boy. Rise to the call of the bicycle and the gentle rain on the helmet. The hills of Brudenell await us. We’ve done this before; we can do it again.

All this being said, there will be no group ride in Arnprior on Sunday. We are off to Eganville.

The Act
William Carlos Williams

There were the roses, in the rain.
Don’t cut them, I pleaded.
They won’t last, she said.
But they’re so beautiful
where they are.
Agh, we were all beautiful once, she said,
and cut them and gave them to me
in my hand
