July 10/16: 86 Kms; 2 Hrs 48; 533 Metres; Nine Riders

Cool air, cloudy skies, and a stiff north wind – that’s what greeted us Sunday morning as we left Stinsons for Story Land. But, with nine cyclists, each taking his turn, sometimes with a partner, we made good time up River Road. Spirits were high and our motivation keen after having missed Saturday’s ride because of heavy rains throughout the day. There was nothing stopping us now as we took to the climbs with pent-up energy and took full advantage of any break in the wind to keep the pace high without burning the legs. Still, you could tell the wind had done some damage because the run in to Renfrew on #132 lacked its usual sprinkling of pepper – with the group only able to hold a steady 39 kms/hr for that section. In the past, with Keith at the front, we’ve held the better part of 50, only slowing in time for the stop sign at Lochiel St.

But, there were no complaints, just relief really; that, and the anticipation of coffee at Tim’s, found us lively and cheerful. Unfortunately, the outdoor patio there was soaked and we had to sit in the air-conditioned space of the restaurant when we would have preferred the fresh air. No problem, there was only thirty kilomtres to ride now, and most of that with a tail/cross wind. Time for the spinnaker but not before #3 in a series of photographs at the Whitton Rd. Cemetery. You can imagine, with a friendly wind, what happened as we pedalled on Lochwinnow and Russett. It was not to be missed. You just should have been there!

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray … . (Reid/Brooker)
